space.gif Periche: Day 7 - 8

Oct 25 - Nov 15, 1998

Today was a short day. The walk from Pangboche to Periche (4240m) was a gradual two and one-half hour ascent up 310 meters. We stayed at the Himalayan Lodge. We’ve noticed that in every village there is a Himalayan Lodge, Sherpa Lodge and a Namaste lodge but none are related to each other in any way (Among the most interesting named lodges we passed was the “Holy Days inn”). The owners of the lodge in one town would refer us to a lodge in the next village which was usually owned by there relative so they are related in that way.

After 7 days of walking we were grateful and relieved to take a rest day. it is very important for acclimatizing at this altitude. We spent the day lounging in the glassed-in sunroom, reading, doing laundry(washing the pair of underwear and socks that we weren’t wearing) playing cards, and eating rara and snickers. We also met Charlie, a yak that guarded the Himalayan lodges toilet (which was across the road), who was to be contended with in many forms whenever leaving the immediate premises.
